How we helped a Railway Operating Company

Nottingham City Couriers has been providing urgent demand logistics support for the movement of rail rolling stock and tractive unit parts, consumables, and tooling for 22 years.

A full 24-hour 7 days a week, 365 days a year service is required as a lot of equipment is maintained outside of normal work hours to reduce downtime.

Running a service late or not at all can have a major financial as well as commercial & political impact on the customer business. Due to the out-of-hours nature of much of the operation, we have to provide a fully documented audit trail of parts and equipment movement. Many of the parts are heavy and awkward in shape and so we require a wide range of vehicles from small vans up to large trucks to provide maximum support.

The customer has 2 key stock holding points within the East Midlands and as well as moving items between these 2 locations there is a network of internal and external recipients and suppliers all over the UK that we can be required to collect from or deliver to at short notice including out of hours- a delivery of a part for a train that has technical issues 3 hours away at 11pm on a Saturday night is not unheard of!

Due to covering all operational hours we often have to liaise with the on-call management as well as individual maintenance engineers.
